As Genesis continues to expand its lineup, one model that it could use is a halo model. Genesis teased the idea of a new halo sports car with the Essentia concept last week at the New York Auto Show and at least one exec hopes that it gets the green light.

Speaking to Motor Trend, Manfred Fitzgerald, global head of Genesis revealed that he wants to build the stunning electric Genesis Essentia concept. “I’m pushing for it,” he told the magazine. Fitzgerald continued with “It’s not approved for production yet. We’re testing the waters here.”

Since the Essentia is still in the concept phase, it’s not known how much of it would translate to a production version, especially its butterfly doors. Peter Schreyer, chief designer at Hyundai-Kia, did state that the doors could go into production, but it’s more likely that a production version of the Essentia would get conventional doors.

There’s also the issue that the Essentia is not based on an existing or future platform, since it was designed as a one-off, which would mean that a production version would have to be adapted to one of three platforms that Genesis is planning. The good news is that Genesis does plan to introduce a coupe by 2021.
