Ford's future safety tech will steer around vehicles to avoid a collision

Ford is expanding its driver-assist technologies with a range of next-generation features designed to ease parking hassles, improve collision avoidance, detect objects in the road and prevent wrong-way driving.

The number of driver-assist safety technologies in vehicles today has grown significantly from the simple blind spot detecting systems and now we have systems, like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning with land-keeping assist and rear cross-traffic alert. Ford has announced that it is developing even more driver-assist technologies.

Ford is expanding its driver-assist technologies with a range of next-generation features designed to ease parking hassles, improve collision avoidance, detect objects in the road and prevent wrong-way driving.

Cross-traffic alert with braking technology build on the rear cross-traffic alert system by being able to automatically stop a vehicle if the driver doesn’t respond to the audible warnings that people or objects are behind the vehicle. A new rear wide-view camera will offer a wide-angle view of the rear of the vehicle and enhanced active park assist will parallel or perpendicular park at the push of a button.

Other technologies in development include systems that steer around vehicles to help avoid high-speed collisions and systems that can warn drivers from traveling the wrong way against traffic. Evasive steering assist will help drivers steer around stopped or slower vehicles to avoid a collision. The system is activated if there is insufficient space to avoid a collision by braking and the driver decides to take evasive action.

Wrong-way alert technology uses a windshield-mounted camera and information from the car’s navigation system to offer customers visual and audio warnings should they begin driving the wrong direction against traffic.
