Ford has unveiled the all-new Ford Focus, which is going on sale in Europe and China this year, while the U.S. won’t get it until next year as a 2020 model. The 2019 Focus is completely revamped with more style, new engines, an improved chassis and more features, like Ford CoPilot360.
Ford says that the 2019 Ford Focus is one of the its vehicles that’s been created with its new product development process, which uses human-centered design to deliver better deliver the models. This translates to a longer hood with a cab-rearward interior to give it more of a presence on the road. The exterior actually looks bigger than the outgoing Focus, but Ford says that its dimensions are unchanged. Inside there’s also more interior room and that more sculpted, upscale looking exterior is now more aerodynamic.
Globally the new Focus is offered in sedan, five-door hatchback and wagon body styles, but North America will likely only get the hatchback and sedan.
The 2019 Focus has more interior room thanks to a longer wheelbase, which provides more room for rear seat passengers. Shoulder-room increases by 2.4 inches and knee clearance and legroom grows by 2 inches and 2.8 inches, respectively. In the front, the instrument panel positioning has been optimized for getting in and out of the Focus and an electric parking brake and rotary gear shift dial frees up space and provide easier access to bins and cup holders for the driver and front passenger.
There’s lots of new tech, like the Ford CoPilot360 driver assist features, FordPass Connect WiFi connectivity, wireless charging for your phone and SYNC 3 that’s accessed via an 8 inch touchscreen.
The 2019 Focus gets an all-new chassis and suspension with a 20 percent improvement in torsional rigidity, plus a electric power steering system that will provide a more engaging steering feel. The 2019 Focus also gets Drive Mode Technology with three drive modes: Normal, Sport and Eco modes.
In China, the new Focus will offer a range of engines, including the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine and a new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine. In Europe the Focus adds two additional options: a 1.5-liter EcoBoost gasoline and 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel. Ford has not announced which engines will be offered in North America. The new Focus also debuts a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
