Sales of the Ford Mustang dropped 32 percent last month, which allowed the Chevy Camaro to overtake it for the first time in nearly two years. Sales of the Mustang have dropped off so significantly that Ford has now idled the Flat Rock, Michigan plant that produces the Mustang for a month, until October 17.

Sales of the current generation Mustang started off strong when it debuted to coincide with the model’s 50th anniversary. Sales were so strong for the redesigned Mustang, that it took the sales crown back from its rival, the Chevy Camaro. Now thanks to strong incentives, the Camaro is now outselling the Mustang for the first time since October 2014. Camaro incentives tripled last month to $3,409, compared with an average discount of $2,602 for the Mustang.
For the year, the Mustang is still outselling the Camaro with 87,258 Mustangs sold in the U.S., down 9.3 percent, while Chevy has sold $54,535 Camaros, which is down 11 percent. Much of the decline of both models is also being blamed on an overall cooling of auto sales in the U.S.
