Volkswagen has announced that it will preview a new five-passenger version of the VW Atlas SUV next week at the New York Auto Show. The five-passenger Atlas will debut as a concept version next week, but is a preview of the new SUV that has been designed specifically for the American market.

“The Atlas has built strong momentum for Volkswagen in the SUV segment, and we are excited to grow our SUV portfolio with this new, Chattanooga-assembled five-passenger SUV,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “We are not only committed to this market, we are committed to our U.S. manufacturing home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.”

The five-passenger Atlas will be based on VW’s MQB platform and it will most likely have the same 2.0L and 3.6L engines as the larger seven-passenger Atlas. VW hasn’t confirmed what it will be called, but recent trademarks suggest that it will either be called the Atlas Allsport or Atlas Cross Sport.

VW has also announced that the new five-passenger SUV will be built at its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. VW will invest approximately $340 million to bring the SUV to market.
