The Lexus CT is already dead in the United States, but the hybrid hatchback is still being sold in some other markets. While it was believed that the CT is effectively being replaced by the new UX crossover, there may still be room for the CT in the Lexus lineup, since Lexus has confirmed a successor is in the works.

Lexus’s European boss Pascal Ruch has revealed to Auto Express that it is working on a new CT, but that it will offer “something different” as Lexus tries to take on other compact luxury hatchbacks. The big change is that the new CT could arrive with both hybrid and fully electric versions, that would also give Lexus a rival to the Tesla Model 3.

Ruch also stated that he believes that there’s room for both the CT and UX, “The CT has a high conquest ratio of 70 to 75 percent,” Ruch said. “It’s useful at bringing new people to the brand. People buy the CT for efficiency; with the UX, we’re looking for a different customer.”

Auto Express expects that the new CT will arrive in 2020 and will be based on Toyota’s new TNGA platform. This isn’t the first time that we’re hearing about a fully electric CT, since earlier this year Japan’s Nikkan also reported that an electric CT will go on sale in 2020.
