Last year it was reported that VW was going to bring the diesel powered Golf GTD to the U.S. sometime next year. But now VW may have to reverse that decision.
After crunching the numbers, VW is now thinking twice about bringing the Golf GTD to the U.S. since it might cost too much. For some reason VW can’t produce the 2.0L TDI engine at its plant in Mexico, so it would have to be imported from Germany, which would add too much cost.

“The GTD would be a great car,” Volkswagen Group of America CEO Michael Horn stated, but with that added cost, “the price point is not really attractive. So the probability is sort of diminishing.”

Last year it was predicted that the Golf GTD would be priced around $27,000. Horn did not reveal why the GTD’s engine can’t be produced in Mexico, so now it looks like our dreams of a diesel-powered GTI in the U.S. are disappearing.
