Chrysler is slowing production of its Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans due to slowing sales. Combined sales of the two minivans are down 15 percent so far this year, although most of the decline is due to a 26 percent drop in Grand Caravan sales.
Chrysler’s Windsor, Ontario plant has three eight-hour shifts that build the minivans, but to align the minivans closer with the slipping demand, Chrysler is going to cut the shifts to four-hours each. Chrysler was building one other minivan, the VW Routan, which is essentially a Chrysler minivan with some VW styling cues, but none have been produced this year.
On March 1 Chrysler had a 69-day supply of the Town & Country and a 43-day supply of the Grand Caravan.
Production is expected to return to normal on March 18.
