Dakota fans that were sad that the current Dakota pickup was killed a few months ago can celebrate this little bit of news. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has confirmed plans for a new Dakota. That may make some of you happy, but wait… There’s a 50% chance that the Dakota could switch to a unibody platform, according to Marchionne. If that happens the Dakota would basically be something more along the lines of the Honda Ridgeline than the past Dakota.

Chrysler recently announced plans to introduce a diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee in the U.S. and now there’s a good chance that the next Dakota could also be offered with a diesel.

In Europe the Grand Cherokee is offered with a 3.0L diesel V6 that puts out 237 horsepower and 406 lb-ft. of torque. Chrysler hasn’t confirmed the stats of the diesel we will get in the U.S.
