Today is the official start of the 2011 Detroit Auto Show and to kick off the show the awards for North American Car and Truck of the Year were announced. 49 jurors voted and this year’s awards go to the 2011 Chevy Volt and Ford Explorer.

It’s not that big of a surprise that the Chevy Volt took home the award considering the fact that it was also named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year and Automobile magazine also gave the Volt its own automobile of the year award. The Volt was competing against other new models like the Nissan Leaf, Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Sonata.

Ford’s Explorer has received a total overhaul with a switch from the traditional body-on-frame design to a crossover platform that it shares with the Taurus. This is the third year in a row that Ford has taken home the Truck of the Year award.
