While Mopar decided to use the this year’s SEMA Show to debut its new 1,000 horsepower crate engine, Chevy is taking a slightly different approach with its debut. Chevy has unveiled the eCOPO Camaro concept, which celebrates the original COPO Camaro from 50 years ago, but it also looks to the future with its electric powertrain.
The Chevy eCOPO Camaro concept was developed by GM and the electric drag racing team Hancock and Lane Racing. It is based on the 2019 COPO Camaro, but it’s powered by an electric motor with more than 700 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. The concept also features GM’s first 800-volt battery back. With that much power, Chevy estimates quarter-mile times in the 9-second range.
The electric motor is based on a pair of BorgWarner HVH 250-150 motor assemblies, each generating 300 lb-ft. of torque. The electric motor is mated to a conventional racing-prepared “Turbo 400” automatic transmission.
