With the arrival of longer range electric cars, like the Tesla Model 3 and Chevy Bolt, the BMW i3 has had a harder time finding buyers, which has contributed to rumors that the i3 could eventually disappear. We’ll have to wait and see if BMW does decide to not build a second-generation BMW i3, but it has confirmed that the i3 will still be part of its lineup in 2021.
In an email to The Drive, BMW i spokesperson Paloma Brunckhorst stated, “The BMW i3 is a really important car for us. In 2021 we will have the BMW i3, the Mini BEV, the BMW iX3, the BMW i4 and BMW iNext.”
Will the i3 last beyond 2021? We’ll have to wait and see. For now at least BMW has been upgraded the i3’s battery to give it a longer range. The 2019 BMW i3 has been upgraded with a 42.2 kWh battery pack that gives it a driving range up to 153 miles, which puts it on par with the Nissan Leaf, but below the Model 3, Chevy Bolt and the upcoming Hyundai Kona EV.
