BMW has yet to officially unveil the all-new BMW M5, but BMW has released a whole set of photos that show off a camouflaged M5. The big news is that BMW has revealed some of the details about what will power the 2018 BMW M5, which in this case is the new M xDrive system.
The new BMW M5 will be powered by a 600-hp 4.4L V8
The new M5 will come standard with all-wheel drive, but the M xDrive system gives you the ability to manually select rear-wheel drive if you want. The driver can choose from five different configurations based on combinations of the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (all-wheel drive, all-wheel drive sport, rear-wheel drive).
How does the M xDrive system work? A transfer case splits a portion of the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels, the Active M Differential is responsible for then distributing the drive between the rear wheels. This active control element is part of the M xDrive system’s functionality and its locking effect can be varied between zero and 100 per cent. Every time that the engine is started, the BMW M5 defaults to all-wheel drive.
The new M5 will be powered by an updated 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 that will have more horsepower and torque than the current engine. The V8 should have around 600 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. Some of the upgrades to the V8 include, higher injection pressure, new turbochargers, more powerful lubrication and cooling systems, plus a modified, lighter exhaust system. The only transmission available will be a new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.
The new M5 should debut later this year and arrive early next year as a 2018 model.
