As the 3-Series continues to grow in size, there will be more room in BMW’s lineup for the 2-Series and upcoming 1-Series models. BMW is reportedly looking at expanding the 2-Series lineup, which will also get a four-door coupe model, like the 4-Series, which will be dubbed the 2-Series Gran Coupe. Unlike the 4-Series Gran Coupe that isn’t available in an M version, it’s being reported that the 2-Series Gran Coupe will get an M version – called the M2 Gran Coupe.
The M2 Gran Coupe will give BMW a rival to the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and Audi RS3 sedan. The M2 Gran Coupe will be based on the 2-Series Gran Coupe, which is expected to arrive by 2019. The M2 Gran Coupe will be powered by an inline-six engine with around 365 horsepower that sends its power to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
While the reports claim that the M2 Gran Coupe may follow in the footsteps of the 4-Series and 6-Series Gran Coupes with their four-door coupe profiles, there’s another report that the 2-Series Gran Coupe could adopt a five-door hatchback body style.
