BMW is working on a new “green” supercar that will be launched by the end of 2012. The new BMW supercar would rival the Audi R8 and upcoming Mercedes SLC.

The new supercar will showcase BMW’s EfficientDynamics system, which combines fuel-saving technology such as direct injection, brake energy regeneration and stop-start.

Sources claim that the two-seater will be a modern day M1, which may draw cues from the M1 Hommage Concept that was unveiled earlier this year.

It’s rumored that the yet to be named supercar will be powered by BMW’s twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter straight six and will get gas mileage that is equivalent to the 5 Series.
