Is BMW cooking up a hotter version of the 7 Series? Maybe. BMW filed a trademark application a few days ago for the BMW M7 name, which could mean that an M7 is a possibility.

Even with the M7 trademark that doesn’t mean that BMW will actually use the name. BMW already had the M7 name trademarked from April 24, 2012 – April 27, 2018, but never actually used the name. BMW does already have a pretty potent version of the 7 Series with the 600-hp M760i.

There’s a chance that if BMW does decide to go with the M7, it could borrow the 4.4L V8 from the upcoming M8. The M8 is expected to have more than 600 horsepower, so it could be an option. The smaller V8 engine would add more advantages than just the extra horsepower over the M760i’s V12, since the smaller engine will also be lighter.
