It’s been reported that Mercedes-Benz is going to update the naming structure of some of its models and now it’s been confirmed. By 2020 Mercedes-Benz will have brought more than 30 models on to the market worldwide with eleven of them being new, which is why the brand needs to change its naming structure.
“After more than 20 years of continuity involving some of the most recognized and successful product names in the world, we are now making our system of vehicle nomenclature even more understandable.”

For the core models (A,B,C,E and S) the model designation will be made up of between one and three upper-case letters. The SUV lineup will all start with GL. The “G” is representative of the iconic G-Class, while the “L” is a letter that appears time and time again over the history of Mercedes-Benz. The G-Class will be the only SUV in the lineup that will keep its one-letter name.
A third letter for the none-core models will indicate each model’s relationship with the core series. For example the CLA is derived from the A-Class.
Lastly the engine lineup will also get some changes with the new names being shorter (c for compressed natural gas, d for diesel, e for electric, f for fuel cell, h for hybrid).
