Volkswagen is in the process of preparing its next offering for the electric SUV segment. The automaker has put to rest any speculation by confirming that the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will be making its official debut this October, with a U.S. launch to follow at some point in 2027 as the replacement for the now defunct ID.4.
There is some weight to the name change. In opting for the Tiguan moniker over the ID.4 badge, Volkswagen is tapping into a name that already has a good deal of recognition with American SUV buyers.
To whet appetites before the unveiling, VW has put out the first images of a camouflaged ID. Tiguan prototype, an early indication of where the new EV is headed compared to what came before.
For all the new nomenclature, the ID. Tiguan does not seem set to upend the formula the ID.4 put in place. The proportions and overall shape of the prototype are much the same, but there is a more distinct identity to be found in the reworked front and rear fascias.
The most obvious difference is at the front with a full-width LED light bar spanning the headlights. At the back, the taillights have been made more rectangular, a departure from the softer lines of the outgoing model’s lighting. How much the styling will mirror the gas-powered Tiguan will be apparent once the camouflage comes off in October.
As for what is under the hood, Volkswagen has yet to put any powertrain figures on the table. We would anticipate the usual mix of single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD variants, but nothing has been confirmed.
Then there is the matter of range. While the ID. Tiguan could well better the numbers of the old ID.4, details such as battery size, charging times and horsepower are still being kept under wraps.
