According to the latest reports, Mercedes is working on an AMG version of the next-generation A-Class.

Autocar is reporting that the AMG-badged A-Class will be powered by a 320-hp turbocharged 2.0L mated to a all-wheel-drive system. The AMG version of the A-Class is due to go on sale in the UK in September 2012. It will compete primarily with the Audi RS3, VW Golf R and the M Sport-badged version of the second-generation BMW 1 Series.

The next-generation A-Class is going to be based on Mercedes’ MFA (Modularen Frontantriebs-Architektur) platform, which does away with the current heavy “sandwich floor.” In terms of styling the next A-Class, codenamed W176 will sit lower than the current model and will adopt styling cues from the F800 Style concept car.

Expect to see a concept version of the next A-Class at the Shanghai Motor Show.
