It’s been a while since Alfa Romeo has added a new vehicle to its lineup, but now we have one – the 2023 Tonale small SUV. The Tonale will slot in below the Stelvio as the brand’s new entry-level model.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale shares its platform with the other small SUVs in the Stellantis portfolio, which means that it’s closely related to the Jeep Compass. The good news is that even if it does share its underpinnings with other models, like the Compass, the Tonale looks nothing like the other SUVs.

When the Tonale arrives in early 2023, it will be offered with a choice of two powertrains. There’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 256 horsepower, that’s mated to a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The second option is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that’s powered by a 1.3-liter engine, a 90-kilowatt rear electric motor and a 15.5-kWh battery pack. The plug-in hybrid is the most powerful version with 272 hp. Alfa Romeo says that the PHEV will have a 30 mile electric range and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds.
