As expected, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 is getting the brand’s 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder. Mazda has yet to announce the updates in the US, but it has taken the wraps off the updated 2019 CX-5 in Japan.
The Mazda CX-5 has been known for being one of the more fun to drive crossovers in its segment, but the addition of the turbocharged 2.5L engine will make it even better. In the Mazda6 and CX-9, the turbocharged engine generates 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque. In Japan the 2.5L turbocharged CX-5 will have 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. We’ll have to wait and see if those specs apply to the US version as well.
To improve the driving experience even more, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 also gets an updated version of G-Vectoring Control, which is called G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus). Mazda says that the updated system regulates vehicle motion when returning the steering wheel to center as well as when beginning a steering action.
In Japan the 2019 CX-5 is also gets a new Exclusive Mode special edition, which adds Nappa leather and real woodgrain to the interior.
Beyond the new engine and GVC Plus system, the rest of the 2019 CX-5 appears to be unchanged. In the US it’s expected that the 2019 CX-5 will also introduce the new Signature trim level and don’t be surprised to see Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity to be added as well. We’ll also hopefully get an update soon on the diesel powered CX-5.
