Kia has unveiled the updates to the European version of the 2019 Kia Sportage, which is not only getting a facelift, but also new diesel mild-hybrid and diesel powertrains.

2019 Kia Sportage

Under the hood the 2019 Sportage debuts a new EcoDynamics+ 2.0-liter ‘R’ diesel mild-hybrid powertrain. EcoDynamics+ mild-hybrid powertrain pairs the 2.0L diesel with a 48-volt battery and a starter/generator that not only improves acceleration, but also extends the amount of time that the engine doesn’t need to be used. The system can reduce CO2 emissions by up to four percent on the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

The Sportage’s existing 1.7-liter CRDi diesel engine has been replaced by a new 1.6-liter ‘U3’ CRDi engine, which Kia says is the the cleanest diesel engine it has ever made. The new 1.6-liter diesel engine produces 113 or 134 horsepower, with higher-powered getting available with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed double-clutch transmission.

On the outside the 2019 Kia Sportage gets new front and rear bumpers, redesigned front and rear lighting, and new 16-, 17- and 19-inch alloy wheel designs. Options include chrome sill trim and metallic skid plates, and five new paint colors. Inside there’s a new steering wheel and revised instrument cluster.

2019 Sportage ‘GT-Line’ models get a gloss black hot-stamped radiator grille, a gloss black and silver skid plate, and dark chrome inserts on the side sills and rear tailgate. The GT-Line’s 19-inch alloy wheels have been redesigned, and all models are fitted with a dual exhaust rear valance and revised ‘ice cube’ LED fog lamp designs.

The 2019 Kia Sportage will go on sale in Europe in the third quarter of this year. Kia has not revealed the us-spec version of the 2019 Sportage.
