The redesigned 2017 Jeep Compass was recently put through the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s series of tests. While the 2017 Compass did receive a Top Safety Pick rating it missed out on the highest rating.
To earn the 2017 Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must have good ratings in all five IIHS crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — and an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
The 2017 Compass earned a superior rating for its optional front crash prevention system. A Compass equipped with the system avoided collisions in the 12 mph and 25 mph IIHS track tests. The reason the 2017 Compass didn’t get the Top Safety Pick + rating is because its headlights did not perform up to the IIHS standards.
To get the top award, a vehicle’s headlights have to get either a good or acceptable rating. The 2017 Compass’s optional HID headlights headlights received a marginal headlight rating, while the base halogen headlights earned a poor rating.
