Mercedes-Benz is working on an update to the iconic G-Class SUV, but don’t expect it to change that much. The G-Class hasn’t had a redesign since it was released in 1979, but due to some upcoming stricter EU regulations, Mercedes has to give the boxy SUV a few styling changes.
Sales of the G-Class have tripled in the past five years with 13,000 units sold in 2013, which is one of the reasons why its styling will not change much. “It has to continue as it looks today,” Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche recently stated. “It’s not a vehicle that pretends. The G class is the original.”

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t revealed how much the G-Class will change, but according to one source, it will be widened about 10 cm to give it a more spacious interior. The roof may also be lowered a bit.
