The second-generation Chevy Cruze now holds the title as one of the most fuel efficient models in its class, now that Chevy has revealed that it gets up to 42 mpg on the highway. The 2016 Cruze is “unsurpassed” in the segment, but doesn’t grab the top title, since it matches the Honda Civic with the hybrid-like highway rating.

Cruze L, LS and LT models are rated at 42 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in the city. That highway rating beats rivals, like the Nissan Sentra, Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra. The mpg improvement is attributed to a nearly 250-pound weight reduction and the efficient 153-hp 1.4L turbocharged engine.

If you want an even more fuel efficient Cruze, the Cruze diesel is going to return in early 2017.
