When the last Sonata debuted in 2009 it raised the bar for exterior designs in the mid-size sedan segment. Now the 2015 model does look more refined than the outgoing model, but at the same time it’s design may get a bit lost in the segment that now includes many stylish sedans like the Fusion and Mazda6. Even Toyota just upped its game with the more stylish 2015 Camry. Only time will tell if the 2015 Sonata’s “more refined look” succeeds.

“We crafted the shape of the 2015 Sonata in the same way an award-winning chef refines his recipe over the years,” said Chris Chapman, chief designer, Hyundai Design North America. “With the 2011 Sonata, Hyundai took the mid-size sedan from a meal to a gourmet dinner. The evolution to Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’s more taut, modern lines reflect the improvements in refinement and driving dynamics for 2015.”

The 2015 Sonata is powered by either a 185-hp 2.4L four-cylinder or a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder with 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. of torque. What’s interesting is that the 2.0L turbocharged engine is now down 29 horsepower, but Hyundai says the revised engine now has a broader powerband.
