When the 2015 BMW i8 arrives later this year it will be the first production vehicle to be available with laser headlights. Compared to the standard LED headlights, the optional laser headlights can boost high bean range to just over 1,900 feet, double that of the standard LED high beam.
The laser technology also increases the energy efficiency by 30 percent compared to the LED lights. In addition to lowering power requirement, BMW Laser Light illuminates the road ahead with a significantly higher light intensity without heating up the surrounding area. Laser diodes are ten times smaller than conventional light diodes.

Drivers don’t have to worry about blinding other drivers, since the laser lights use a camera high-beam assistant to detect oncoming traffic. BMW expects to add the laser light system to other BMW models soon.
