The 2014 VW Beetle is getting a new 1.8L turbocharged engine that will replace the current 2.5L five-cylinder engine.

The 2014 VW Beetle is getting a new 1.8L turbocharged engine that will replace the current 2.5L five-cylinder engine. VW has announced that the Beetle 1.8T will start at $20,295 when equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and $21,395 with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Beetle Convertible 1.8T is only available with an automatic transmission and starts at $25,170.
The new 1.8L turbocharged engine has 170 horsepower, which is the same as the outgoing 2.5L engine, but has seven more pound-feet of torque at 184 lb-ft. The new engine is als more fuel efficient than the 2.5-liter unit. The Beetle equipped with the 1.8T and a six-speed automatic transmission now gets 33 mpg on the highway, up from 29 mpg for the 2.5-liter engine. At the same time, the city mileage improves from 22 to 25 mpg. The manual transmission model is rated at 24/32 mpg, up from 21/27 mpg with the old engine.

The arrival of the new 1.8L engine now means that all Beetles are powered by a turbocharged engine.
