The next-generation Lexus GS is almost here with our first look coming in just a few weeks at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. While it’s already been confirmed that the GS will be offered with a V6 and a hybrid setup, sources also claim that a diesel engine could also going to be offered.

If Lexus really wants to go head to head with Mercedes-Benz and BMW, it needs a diesel to compete in Europe. Lexus sources claim that although the main focus will be on hybrids, Lexus does need to broaden the appeal of the brand and diesels would be one way to do that.

The diesel engine that could be offered in the GS is the diesel engine that is currently offered in the IS. According to Autocar the four-cylinder 2.2L diesel engine could be introduced in 2013 and targeted at fleet customers.

An announcement about the diesel powered GS could come as early as the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
