Although it seemed like all the news this week surrounded hybrids and electric vehicles, some automakers are still committed to producing diesel powered models.

Mercedes-Benz wants to increase the number of diesel models it offers so its smaller models will soon be offered in diesel versions. Mercedes-Benz USA President Ernst Lieb recently told Ward’s Auto that a diesel version of the GLK crossover will be offered in the US in 2012. Additionally the next C-Class will be offered with a diesel when it arrives in 2013.

Both models will be powered by a 2.2L four-cylinder diesel engine that uses Mercedes Bluetec trademark.

Currently Mercedes-Benz offers Bluetec diesel engines in the ML and GL-Class SUVs, R-Class crossover and the 2011 E-Class.
