VW Microbus revival slated for 2022

Earlier this month, VW unveiled the I.D. Buzz concept at the Detroit Auto Show, which signaled the possible return of the iconic Microbus. While VW made no production promises at the show, there are now reports that a production version could arrive by 2022.

Based on the same electric MEB platform as the I.D. electric hatchback concept, the I.D. Buzz concept showcased the flexibility of VW’s new electric car platform that will also be the basis for an electric SUV. The first model to enter production will be a production version of the electric hatchback concept, which will then be followed by an SUV.

Microbus fans have their fingers crossed that the resurrected Microbus will become a reality and the I.D. Buzz concept won’t have the same fate as the 2001 Microbus Concept. VW brand chief Herbert Diess is a big fan of the concept. When asked about the I.D. Buzz concept’s future, VW’s head of brand design, Klaus Bischoff stated, “I know what you’re going to ask and the answer is 2022. Diess wants it.”
