VW currently only offers the Tiguan and Touareg SUVs in its lineup, but according to a new report, VW may triple its SUV lineup in the future.
According to two sources, VW is looking to increase its SUV lineup to as many as six SUVs in an effort to overtake Toyota in global sales. Demand for SUVs continues to grow with the segment expected to account for 20.1 percent of global production by 2018, which is up from 17.6 percent in 2012.

“The VW brand still has growth potential in SUVs, which could especially help them to build a stronger position in the U.S. and in emerging markets,” Roman Mathyssek, a German analyst for Strategy Engineers GmbH consulting company told the Automotive News.

Next year a new Tiguan is expected to be introduced and a coupe version plus a longer version are reportedly in the works. VW may also introduce a subcompact crossover, which could take styling cues from the latest Taigun and T-Roc concepts. Lastly a midsized SUV based on the CrossBlue concept is expected to arrive in 2016.
