Based on a stretched version of the MEB platform, called the MEB-XL, the I.D. Buzz measures 194.6 inches long, 77.8 inches wide and 77.3 inches tall. With those large dimensions, the I.D. concept can hold up to eight passengers and even has two luggage compartments.
The I.D. Buzz concept is powered by two electric motors, one that powers the front wheels and one that powers the rear. The two electric motors generate a total of 369 horsepower and can accelerate the concept from 0-60 mph in about five seconds. The I.D. Buzz can also travel up to 270 miles and can be recharged up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.
Fully autonomous vehicles are closer to becoming a reality and VW is using the I.D. Buzz concept to show off its new fully autonomous “I.D. Pilot” driving mode that could make it into production by 2025. In this mode, a slight push on the steering wheel makes it retract and merge into the instrument panel, while a series of sensors and cameras then take over.
VW hasn’t announced when the “Microbus for the future” will arrive, but it will be after 2020.
