VW officially showed off the all-new 2012 Beetle to the masses today. The all-new Beetle is longer, lower and wider than the current model and more importantly, much sportier. Could a guy one day say, “I want a Beetle” without being shunned by all of his friends? Well it could happen, especially with the latest announcement that VW is planning an even sportier R version.
The 2012 Beetle will be available with both diesel and gasoline engines, which includes the popular 2.0 turbo. But if 200 horsepower isn’t quite enough for you to forget about the girly Beetle currently sitting in VW dealerships, VW has an even more powerful version in the works, the Beetle R. VW hasn’t confirmed what will power the R version of the Beetle, but it’s expected to be a more powerful version of the 2.0L turbo, in the form of the 265-hp version that powers the Golf R. Yup and not like the Euro-only Beetle RSi, the Beetle R is going to come to the U.S.
It’s not yet known when the Beetle R will be released, but at least you have the 2.0T version for now. The convertible Beetle is also expected in 2013.
