Volvo may soon join BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz with a coupe-like SUV. Volvo recently introduced its third SUV, the compact XC40 and now it might be looking at a sleeker version, dubbed the XC50. The Volvo XC50 would fill the slot between the XC40 and XC60 SUVs, just like how the new BMW X2 slots between the X1 and X3 models.

According to Auto Express, is the XC50 does get the green light, it won’t arrive until around 2020.

“We cover 98 percent of the segments, so it’s more likely we’ll go further into the depths than expand,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo’s Senior Vice President for Europe told Auto Express. When he was questioned about the XC50, he stated, “potentially, but not in the short term.”

Even if Volvo isn’t ready to confirm the XC50, it already trademarked the name. This also isn’t the first 50-Series name that Volvo has recently trademarked, since a record was recently found for the Volvo S50. The Volvo S50 could end up being a four-door coupe version of the next-generation S40.
