Volvo has already started releasing its new 60 Series lineup, with the arrival of the 2018 XC60 and soon, the 40 Series models will also come into the light with the new XC40 crossover. Volvo may be preparing something else too, since Volvo recently trademarked the S50 name.

Since all Volvo’s current models fall into the 90, 60 and 40 Series buckets, there’s lots of rumors about what the S50 could actually be. Some speculate that it could be a new coupe, but then again, wouldn’t that be called the C50, since Volvo past coupes started with a C. But maybe Volvo is jumping in on the four-door coupe thing with the C50 being a sleeker version of the next-generation S40?

The S50 will likely be based on Volvo’s new CMA platform, which will be the basis for the S40. Chances are if the S50 is indeed a new model and not just Volvo’s attempt to trademark any names that are similar to its current lineup, the S50 could arrive by 2019.
