Volvo is following several automakers by downsizing its engine lineup and it’s just confirmed that a new three-cylinder engine is in the works and that it will debut sometime in 2016.
Unlike some automakers that are using three-cylinder engines in their smallest models, Volvo intends to use its new 1.5L three-cylinder in models as big as the S60, V60 and even its smaller XC SUVs. Volvo’s global powertrain boss, Derek Crabb confirmed that the first three-cylinder Drive-E engine will be a gas-burning unit with a turbocharger.

The three-cylinder engine is also being designed to work in conjunction with a small electric motor as Volvo looks to lower its CO2 emissions significantly by 2020. Interestingly Volvo doesn’t see itself releasing a fully electric models until around 2025 when it feels that they will be more “commercially sensible.”
