It’s being reported that not only will Mazda bring back the RX-7 sports car in 2017, but a new RX-9 sports car will be added to the lineup in 2020.
There have been countless reports about the return of the Mazda RX-7 with the latest report now claiming that it will arrive by 2017. One interesting tidbit from the latest report also claims that in addition to the RX-7, a new RX-9 sports car is in the works and it could arrive by 2020.
If the new RX-7 arrives by 2017 it will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the rotary engine and even more exciting is that the RX-9 sports car could be used to celebrate Mazda’s 100th anniversary in 2020. Mazda won’t confirm the RX-7 or the RX-9, but has reportedly filed trademarks for both names in Japan.
Yasuhiro Aoyama, Mazda’s General Manager of Global Sales and Marketing wouldn’t provide any details about either model, but he did state to motoring.com.au “We celebrate the anniversary of rotary in 2017; 50 years. Then 2020 is the Olympics in Tokyo and the 100th anniversary of Mazda.”
