Earlier this month, VW’s US boss, Hinrich Woebcken revealed that VW still hasn’t made a decision about making a production version of the Atlas Tanoak pickup concept that debuted earlier this year. But a few days ago, VW dropped a hint that it might happen by stating that VW Atlas Tanoak Concept “may be on the cards.”

Both the VW Atlas Tanoak concept and Atlas Cross Sport concepts are being shown off during Monterey Car Week and to celebrate their debut, VW hinted about its future. VW has already announced that the Atlas Cross Sport concept will enter production in 2019 to give buyers another choice in its growing crossover lineup. The Atlas Cross Sport concept is basically a smaller version of the three-row Atlas, which will compete with a growing number of midsize crossovers, like the new Chevy Blazer and upcoming Honda Passport.

In its press release for the Pebble Beach debuts, VW also stated, “Pebble Beach has long since also become an automotive looking glass into the future. Manufacturers showcase what will and may become a reality…” Does this hint that the Tanoak pickup will soon get the green light as well?

“The Atlas Tanoak is our version of the American dream – a genuine pick-up with clear-cut Volkswagen elements and a futuristic, digital vehicle interior architecture,” stated Klaus Bischoff, Head Designer at Volkswagen. If VW does decide to build the Atlas Tanoak it will share its platform with the Atlas SUV, which means that it will be more like the Honda Ridgeline than a traditional truck.
