Volkswagen has officially unveiled the 2021 ID.4, the first of its ID family of electric cars that will be sold in the United States. The ID.4 electric SUV is aimed right at the Tesla Model Y and is priced at $39,995 before the destination charge and the $7,500 federal tax credit.

To get an idea of how big the ID.4 is, it’s a tad smaller than the VW Tiguan, at 4.6-inches shorter (180.5 inches) with a 0.9-inch shorter wheelbase. The ID.4 is also lower and wider than the Tiguan, but the interior volume is expected to be on par with the Tiguan. There’s 99.9 cubic feet of interior volume and 30.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, which expands to 64.2 cubic feet with the seats folded.

The interior features a standard 10-inch infotainment display or an optional 12-inch Discover Pro Max system. In front of the driver, there’s a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster. There’s also wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The ID.4 will come standard with the IQ Drive suite, which is VW’s driver-assistance package, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a blind-spot monitor.

The ID.4 is based on VW’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform and has an 82 kWh battery pack in the SUV’s floor. When it arrives early next year, the ID.4 will be powered by a single electric motor with 201 horsepower that powers the rear wheels. Later next year an all-wheel drive version will arrive with 302 horsepower.

The single-motor ID.4 will have a driving range around 250 miles, which will take 7.5 hours to recharge on a Level 2 charger. A DC Fast Charger can recharge the battery up to 80% in 38 minutes. Buyers will also like that VW is throwing in three years of fast charging at any of Electrify America’s DC fast charging stations.

For buyers that would rather lease the ID.4, Volkswagen has announced a 36-month lease with 10,000 miles a year, is $379 per month with $3,579 due at signing. Later in 2021, the ID.4 AWD Pro will arrive and starts at $43,695. You can reserve the ID.4 today with a refundable $100 reservation feee on VW.com.
