Volkswagen pulled the covers off the sub-compact VW T-Roc crossover this month in Frankfurt, but VW has no plans to offer it in the United States, since it’s deemed as too small for U.S. buyers. Even though the small crossover segment has taken off here, VW executives are still trying to decide if it needs to offer a smaller crossover than the Tiguan in the U.S.
“We are checking the feasibility of a car which is right between T-Roc and Tiguan, and this could be interesting for America,” Frank Welsch, Volkswagen’s director of vehicle development told Autoblog at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
The new crossover is already in the works, since it’s slated to debut late next year in China. It will be based on the MQB platform and will be offered with both gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
“In the U.S., you have Tiguan long wheelbase, and the other [new] one is close to what we have here in Europe as the Tiguan SWB. It’s a little bit smaller than that, about the size of the old Tiguan, but new and it’s off the MQB. This is the idea behind it. In China, we will have this car next year, and we are thinking whether this could be a good idea for America and Russia.” Welsch revealed.
We don’t have an exact timeframe, but if VW does give the new crossover the green light for the United States, it could arrive by the 2019 model year.
