The 2019 Toyota Corolla has earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it misses out on the highest Top Safety Pick+ award, since its headlights weren’t up to par.

To receive the 2018 Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must have good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The vehicle also needs a front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating and available headlights that earn an acceptable or good rating.

The 2019 Corolla hatchback comes with standard, superior-rated front crash prevention, and its optional curve-adaptive headlights earn an acceptable rating. Unfortunately the base headlights earned a marginal rating. The 2019 Corolla hatchback missed out on the Top Safety Pick+ rating, since it’s headlights missed out on the “good” rating.
