Toyota is reportedly going to debut a new sports car division that will be similar to the Lexus F series high performance models. The “new sports car series” is going to debut next month and will likely be spearheaded by the new Toyota Supra.
Right now it’s not known if the new high performance models will be sold outside of Japan, since next month’s unveiling is currently aimed at the Japanese market.
The decision to introduce a new sports car division, is Toyota’s latest attempt to ditch its reputation of boring, emotionless cars. Toyota already offers the Toyota Racing Development performance line in North America and this month Toyota reshuffled development of its sports cars under Gazoo Racing, an internal unit for global motorsports.
Right now Toyota’s sporty models include the 86 and the Yaris GRMN hatchback. Besides the new Supra, there’s also a chance that an MR2 successor could happen, since Gazoo Racing chief Tetsuya Tada hinted at it earlier this year. The new Supra will have its world debut in October at the Tokyo Motor Show.
