The reborn Toyota Supra is almost here and now Toyota is reportedly looking at the idea of bringing back its other iconic sports cars, like the Celica and MR2. Toyota recently trademarked the Celica name again, which is fueling rumors of its return, but now we have a new report about the MR2.

Matt Harrison, Toyota’s European vice president of sales and marketing recently revealed to Autocar that Toyota is currently in the “discussion stage” about bringing back the MR2. He also stated that the MR2 is a favored potential addition to its lineup.

If a new MR2 does get the green light, it’s powertrain could be quite different than the original. Toyota may decide to bring the MR2 back as an electric sports car, which would be based on the Toyota New Global Architecture. THe MR2 would still be a mid-engined sports car, since the compact electric motor could be positioned behind the MR2’s two seats, just like the original.

If Toyota does decide to bring back the MR2, it probably won’t enter production before the mid-2020s.
