When Toyota unveiled the 86-based GR HV Sports concept at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, very few people actually thought it previewed a production model. But now it’s being reported that Toyota is working on a production version of the concept with its targa top.
Japanese website, Response is reporting that Toyota is going to introduce a new hybrid targa-top sports coupe that could arrive as early as 2019. Under the hood the coupe will also be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s mated to a TSH-R (Toyota Sports Hybrid-Racing) system. It’s not known if the four-cylinder is the same 2.0L boxer engine that powers the current 86 and Subaru BRZ or a BMW-sourced 2.0L four-cylinder.
It’s now known if new sports coupe will be offered in the United States, but the same article also says that a replacement for the current Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ will arrive in 2020.
