Yup you read that headline right. According to the guys over at Motor Trend, the rear-wheel-drive Toyota GT86 platform that is used by the Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ will also be used by the upcoming Toyota Supra successor and the next-generation BMW Z4.
Toyota and BMW recently formed a partnership to work on lithium-ion battery technology and a new sports car together. The partnership will be used to create a successor to the Toyota Supra, which will use the GT86 platform, but will reportedly be powered by a 2.5L four-cylinder engine and a hybrid system that will generate around 400 horsepower. The Supra isn’t expected until 2017, but Toyota could release a concept version later this year at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Supra is expected to be inspired by the FT-HS hybrid concept that debuted in 2007. BMW is reportedly going to help with the suspension settings and handling of the Supra.
If the reports are true the GT86 platform will also be used by the next-generation BMW Z4. BMW is currently a testing six-cylinder hybrid system for the next Z4 that will also generate around 400 horsepower.
Stay tuned…
