It’s been seven years since VW pulled the plug on the Phaeton luxury sedan in the US, but Automotive News is reporting that VW is going to try it again. VW reportedly wants to tap into the large luxury sedan market, so it plans on bringing back the Phaeton. “A brand as large as Volkswagen needs a halo project in the upscale segment,” CEO Martin Winterkorn told Bloomberg this month, where he confirmed that the Phaeton will return to U.S. “We’ve seen what happens to brands that don’t have that kind of project.”
The next US-spec Phaeton could debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show as 2015 model. It’s expected that it will share its platform with the Audi A8 and will be priced around $60,000.
