BMW is expected to reveal an all-new 5 Series in a few months, but it’s also being reported that the next-generation 3 Series isn’t that far away either. According to Auto Express, the next-generation 3 Series will debut within the next 18 months.
Thanks to increased competition from the new Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW is going to attempt to keep the 3 Series ahead of the pack with a lot of upgrades, including a new lighter platform and even all-electric version. The new 3 Series will be based on a new lighter platform called CLAR, for Cluster Architecture. The platform will use more carbon fiber to keep weight down, which may make it the lightest model in its class.

Under the hood, the new 3 Series will be offered with a range of three-, four- and six-cylinder engines. A plug-in hybrid is also in the cards as well as a fully-electric version that will rival the Tesla Model 3.
