Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport concept debuts with 395-hp plug-in hybrid system

In addition to the Golf GTI Clubsport and Golf GTI Performance, VW has unveiled another Golf model – the Golf GTE Sport concept in Austria today at Wörthersee.

In addition to the Golf GTI Clubsport and Golf GTI Performance, VW has unveiled another Golf model – the Golf GTE Sport concept in Austria today at Wörthersee. Even though its name may make you think that it’s just a sportier version of the Golf GTE, you’ll be pleasantly surprised thanks to the concept’s carbon fiber body and gullwing doors. VW says that the front of the concept previews “how the Golf GT models could develop in future.”

The plug-in hybrid system is powered three motors that consist of a 295-hp 1.6L four-cylinder and two electric motors, one in the transmission and a second that powers the rear wheels. The system generates a total 395 horsepower and 495 lb-ft. of torque. That’s enough power for a 0-62 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph. The Golf GTE Sport concept can also travel up to 31 miles in electric mode.

Inside there is only room for two passengers that can enter the concept via doors that swing up. Once inside there are two bucket seats with five-point seat belts.
