Motorsport is in Audi’s genes, it has always been a permanent feature of our brand’s character,” says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development at Audi. “With the new Audi R8, our engineers are bringing accumulated racing expertise from the race track onto the road. No other model of ours evokes more dynamic emotion. The new R8 V10 plus is therefore the most powerful and fastest series-production Audi of all time.”

The 2016 R8 V10 is powered by a new 5.2L FSI engine that will be available in two versions, one with 540 horsepower and the top spec version cranking out 610 horsepower. The V10 is mated to a 7-speed S tronic transmission and a new all-wheel-drive system that can send 100 percent of the torque to either the front or rear wheels. The top 610 horsepower version can reach 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 205 mph.

Audi is working on other versions of the R8, including the electric R8 e-tron. The all-electric R8 e-tron is powered by two electric motors that generate a total 455 horsepower and 678 lb-ft. of torque. That’s enough power for a 0-62 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Audi also says that the R8 e-tron will be able to travel up to 279 miles on a single charge. Audi hasn’t released any photos of the R8 e-tron, but it will get modifications to the outer shell and on the wheels to help it achieve an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.28.
